Light rail between campuses?

Light rail between campuses?

A light rail connection from Leiden, via Delft to Dordrecht. This is advocated by a coalition of forty regional parties. This new public transport route should better connect universities, businesses and residents.

The plan is part of the Zuid-Holland Growth Agenda, a campaign of the province of Zuid-Holland in which TU Delft is also involved. The campaign aims to stimulate activity and innovation in the region and improve mobility.

Outcome

In Trouw, Rector Tim van der Hagen explains that a light rail connection between the universities of Leiden, Rotterdam, The Hague and Delft is necessary if the country is to remain at the forefront of innovation. More asphalt will not solve the traffic jams. You have to arrange public transport properly’.

The light rail would offer a solution for students who are also following part of their education in Delft in Leiden or Rotterdam. “A fast line without a track book between campuses is super important to us,” says Van der Hagen. Lightrail is a collective name for rail transport systems that are somewhere between train, metro and tramway: faster than a tramway, lighter and cheaper than a train. (MvdV)
