Readers respond to last week’s Delta article on internationalization at TU Delft. “I’m a first-year MSc student at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering. I read the Delta newspaper today and felt that the newspaper is trying to contradict its own views.
The entire paper contains just one page in English and that page has the title ‘O Canada…help us internationalize Delft’. It shows that TU Delft is feeling helpless in its approach to building an international university. I feel that TU Delft has everything it needs to build an international work environment. In a month there are just eight pages of information in English (combining all the pages in the month’s Deltas) for 2,500 international students. I guess your team is capable of doing much more and I feel that it’s very important. The university can do an online survey to ask for views from students about internationalization. Even if 10% of the students reply you will have 250 views. Hence I strongly recommend that you include more English pages in your newspaper.”

“How can you think to internationalize a university if you can’t even increase a page in Delta…only one page for international students for the whole week! If that is the case you should bring out a monthly newspaper in English, so that we can know what are the activities going on in the university.”

“While I was expecting to see more English pages, the number of pages went from two to only one, which includes a really large photo and tiny information. I can imagine that maybe Delta is about to go all Dutch soon. My question is: do you think it’s fair to keep the English page(s) in this manner at a university that is proud to be international all across the world? Of course, I’m not expecting Delta to be 50% English, that’s obvious. However, it could’ve been better to see a couple more pages that can also attract international students.”
