Just before the Christmas holidays, the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team presented their new design. With it, they hope to win on the open sea in Monaco. Last year, they already came second.

 

A lighter and more reliable electrical system, maximum weight saving and a better hydrofoil system. These are the main improvements over last year’s design presented by the TU Delft Hydro Motion Team on Wednesday 21 December.

 

In July, the previous Delft hydrogen-powered hydrofoil boat finished second in the Open Sea Challenge of the ninth edition of the Monaco Energy Boat Challenge. The team did extremely well on the manoeuvrability and endurance sections, but in the speed race, the boat dropped out due to a technical failure.

 

“The foiling didn’t go well last year,” explains this year’s Operations Manager Mandy Vermeijs. “The hull didn’t really come off the water.” Therefore, this year, there is a lot of focus on the hydrofoil system. Among other things, by saving as much weight as possible and by scheduling a long trial period (from April to July 2023) for adjusting the hydrofoils and its controls.
