I investigate whether certain partial stochastic differential equations have solutions, and by doing so I extend a mathematical theory about equations in infinite dimensional spaces. Partial stochastic differential equations describe changes over time of systems that are affected by random influences, like, for instance, molecules in the air that continuously collide.
The meaning of the equations I work on is difficult to explain to non-mathematicians. I didn’t understand the equations either when I started my PhD research two years ago. That was because I hadn’t worked on stochastic mathematics before. For my Master’s at the University of Leiden I specialised in applied analysis.
You can compare mathematics with languages. I had to learn a new language at TU Delft. Even within our department people do not fully understand each others’ languages. Last year we had a post-doc who worked on a topic that was only slightly different from mine, and even then I had to work hard to understand the details of his work. It’s bizarre, isn’t it?
I enjoy my work. It’s rather fundamental and great gymnastics for the brain. Adding new pieces to the puzzle gives great satisfaction. I’ll write some scientific articles soon about some modest achievements. Who knows, one day maybe my work will lead to a groundbreaking theory.
I think it’s a pity that the maths you learn at high school does not link well to what mathematics at university is all about. That mathematics is comparable to languages is something you do not learn in high school. Some formulas are like poetry. There’s this famous German book, ‘Das Buch der Beweise’, containing beautiful proofs of world-famous theorems. Some proofs are very short, others take lots of detours.
This is not a book that you read in your hammock. You need a pen and paper when reading in order to follow and understand what’s written. But still, in some way, it can be relaxing because it keeps your mind off real life problems. But you shouldn’t read it just before bedtime though, because within no time your brain becomes extremely active and you can’t sleep for hours.”
Niet alleen bezuinigen om op een nulbegroting uit te komen, ook geld vrijmaken om opnieuw te investeren in onderzoek, onderwijs en infrastructuur. Dat is vanaf het begin de boodschap van het college van bestuur (cvb) aan faculteiten en diensten. Maar naar welke onderwijsprojecten, welke onderzoeksgroepen en welke faciliteiten gaat het geld straks precies?
De definitieve herijkingsagenda bevat nog weinig details en veel visie. Zo staan er zeven gebieden in die mogelijk in aanmerking komen voor investeringen: aard- en klimaatonderzoek; architectuur, bouw en bouwtechnologie; gezondheidsonderzoek; ict; materialenonderzoek; procestechnologie en stromingsleer; transport. Dit lijstje heeft een overlap met de al eerder bekend geworden facultaire synergieplannen. Daarnaast maken ook de vier Delft Research Initiatives (energy, health, infrastructures en environment) kans op extra geld.
Op het gebied van onderwijs valt volgens de herijkingsagenda te denken aan investeringen in collegerama, open courseware, iTunes U, digitale coaching, de virtuele collegezaal en het learning centre. Bij noodzakelijk onderhoud zijn mogelijke investeringen: brandveiligheidsvoorzieningen, achterstallig onderhoud aan gebouwen en de 24-uurs openstelling van niet nader genoemde faculteiten.
Medewerkers die dachten in de definitieve besparingsplannen alle antwoorden te vinden, komen dus bedrogen uit. Maar zoals het cvb al tijdens de hoorzittingen in mei zei: de dertig miljoen euro die vrijgemaakt moet worden voor investeringen is er niet van de ene op de andere dag. Eerst maar eens op een nulbegroting uitkomen, dus eerst maar eens de vijftien miljoen euro aan bezuinigingen realiseren.
Details hoeven ook pas bekend te zijn bij de oplevering van de facultaire meerjarenplannen 2011-2014 in het derde kwartaal en het instellingsplan 2011-2014 in het vierde kwartaal.
