Every week, a Delta editor tests the food on campus, from the Aula to X and everything in between. We write our review with a hungry yet critical eye. Bon appetite!

Meal: Classic Burger & Broodje Gringo Worst
The sunshine enticed us outside to the food trucks on this autumn day. The food trucks, wedged between the Aula and TNW, offer changing menus so you never know what lunch will be. We were not disappointed as at more than 100 metres we could smell it – the fragrance of melting fat on a hot plate. Need we say more? At the end of the exam period you want just one thing – comfort food. And Chorizos & CO give just that.
- Temperature
Burger (6+)
Our thermometer does not rise any further than 47 degrees Celsius. This means that it does not meet the legally required 60 degrees Celsius, but there is a reason for this. The ambient temperature, despite the sunshine, is on the chilly side. The addition of cold garnishing does not help either. The iceberg lettuce, tomato and good dollop of sauce clearly affect the temperature. So we just eat up quickly!
Sausage (7)
The meat may not be burning hot, but it is heated through. We measure 55 degrees Celsius. It probably cools off quickly because of the other ingredients – the roll, the coleslaw and the toppings – that are cold. Luckily the sausage is cooked through.
- Texture
Burger (6+)
Looking at the juicy burger, you would expect the fat to drip down your hands, but the first bite reveals that the toasted burger is quite dry. It has been flattened so much that the texture resembles a ‘simple’ snack bar burger.
Sausage (8)
The white bread roll is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Exactly right. The hotdog itself is juicy and tender, just as it should be. The creamy coleslaw, mixed with the crispy fried bacon, is just the thing and finishes the whole thing off.
- Taste
Burger (8+)
There are no words for it, it’s that good! What a taste explosion of fried onions, hamburger and sharp mustard. The different flavours blend perfectly together when you take a bite. Tip: choose a burger that has the slightly spicier jalapeños for the best burger experience.
Sausage (9)
The meat, prepared on the grill, is salty and has a tasty smoky flavour. The sweetness of the barbecue sauce and the saltiness of the bacon bits are perfectly balanced. The coleslaw is fresh and, apart from the creamy sauce that it is mixed with, makes you believe that there is something healthy on your bread roll.
- Quantity/proportion
Burger (8)
A good burger is a burger that you can’t resist biting into. A hungry student may be easily satisfied, but in this case, the quantity is perfectly filling. However, we would have liked to have had a bit more meat. As we said earlier, the burger was too flat. And if you don’t like healthy things, the lettuce leaf will probably be chucked into the rubbish bin straightaway.
Sausage (7)
The proportion between the bread roll, meat and the toppings is perfect. The meat does not overpower and luckily the sauce is added sparingly enough that the flavour of the hotdog is not overpowered by barbecue sauce. As a whole, it is a big snack. Delicious for the hunger pang around lunch, but probably not enough as a filling lunch for most people.
- Price/quality
Burger (7.5)
If a BigMac costs EUR 3.65, then EUR 5 is fine for a home-made burger, especially as this fast food does fill you up.
Sausage 7
At EUR 5, this is not a cheap hotdog. But then, as a cheap food predator, you shouldn’t really try your luck at food trucks as their prices are not usually that cheap. Nevertheless, at EUR 5 your expectations are, of course, high. Fortunately, the hotdog meets expectations and is worth the pain in your purse.
- Presentation
Burger 9
Can food be sexy? We think so. Even in its paper jacket you can’t wait to devour it. Utterly photogenic, the burger looks great from any angle.
Sausage 8
As you would expect from a hip food truck, the food is Instagram worthy. While it takes just one glance to know that this is not the healthiest lunch that you’ll eat this week, the bacon bits and the shiny sauce make your mouth water.
- Experience
Burger 9
The food trucks are run by friendly people who greet us pleasantly. Our hamburger is cooked in front of us on a large plate. The walls surrounding the trucks on the Mekelpark are a great place to gobble up your purchase, especially if the sun is shining. Close your eyes and dream of summer barbecues.
Sausage 10
The guy who runs the Worsttruck is worth a mention. He is an impressive bearded apparition whose laugh goes right through you. He is extremely helpful when we can’t pronounce the word ‘gringo’ and, faster than the Hyperloop, he sends us our receipt by email.
