Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant: ‘Hackers at TU/e had login credentials’
The hackers who attacked Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) had access to the login credentials of a student and a staff member, reports Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant (in Dutch) on Friday based on anonymous sources. TU/e refuses to confirm or deny this when asked by the news agency HOP. The university’s spokesperson stated that no information can be shared about the details of the hack while the investigation is ongoing.
The cyberattack was launched nearly two weeks ago. To prevent a data breach, TU/e shut down the network for a week. Other educational institutions were also affected, though the disruption at TU Delft was limited.
Shared
According to de Volkskrant, TU/e shared information about the hack with other educational institutions. This did not involve details about the cause of the attack, but rather a check for “specific vulnerabilities”, said Jérôme Zijderveld (Chief Information Security Officer at TU Delft) to Delta. In response, TU Delft accelerated its cyber monitoring. Radboud University (in Dutch) quickly opted to speed up the introduction of two-factor authentication for the EduVPN remote work connection.
Last Monday, TU/e’s network was functioning properly again, and educational activities resumed in full. The university has hired the cybersecurity firm FoxIT to further investigate the hack. The police are also involved, according to the university’s magazine, Cursor. The university plans to publicly share the lessons learned from this hack in April.
