Delft blues

This weekend Delft gets a serious case of the blues, as the 8th annual ‘De Koninck Blues Festival’ kicks off on Friday and Saturday February 17 and 18, with some 50 blues bands performing all day and night in 30 bars and cafes around Delft.

With so many bands and venues to choose from, you’ll find good music to listen and groove to in virtually every Delft bar. But here are some tips for the best of the blues this weekend.

Start your Friday night blues experience at 20:00 at Speakers, where Dutch singer/songwriter Kaz Lux will show his audience exactly why Dutch music magazine ‘Oor’ once labeled him ‘the best singer in the Netherlands’. Kaz Lux is a legend of Dutch ‘Nederpop’. Together with Dutch master guitarist Jan Ackermann, Kaz Lux was frontman for the legendary Dutch rock band ‘Brainbox’ in the 1960s and 70s. Now gone solo, Kaz Lux’s set will feature some of his greatest hits, like ‘Down Man’, ‘The Smile’ and ‘Dark Rose’.

Also on Friday night, at 22:30 at ‘t Boterhuis, check out the ‘Dicky Greenwood Band’, led by Den Haag’s master blues singer/guitarist Dicky Greenwood. The band has opened the European tour shows of many famous American blues artists, like Little Smokey Smothers and Dr Ross the Harmonica Boss. Greenwood’s guitar style is influenced by Albert Collins, Ronnie Earl and Jimmy Johnson. Come listen to Greenwood tell his poignant blues stories with voice and guitar.

On Saturday at 17:00, ‘Woody and the Sideman’ will rock Cafe de Clipper with their unique blend of Southern Country, Louisiana Swamp and Nashville Rhythm. Singer Woody and his sideman guitarist Ad de Hont have been headlining on the European circuit for decades and also toured the USA, Canada and Thailand, playing their passionate and melodious brand of blues.

Also on Saturday at 23:00 at De Waag, treat yourself to the pulsating sounds of ‘Prof. Deaf and the Eardrums’, a high-energy Belgian Swing & Blues Band, featuring guitar, harmonica, drums and (contra) bass. The band will have the joint jumping with their mix of Swing, West Coast Blues, Soul and Funk. The Dutch press has called this band a “blend of The Commitment and The Blues Brothers that always keeps the dance-floor full”. (DM)
