Canada will turn foreign students away

Because of a crisis in the housing market and pressure on healthcare, fewer foreign students will be allowed to come to Canada. The measure will last for two years, the government has announced.

The Canadian government stresses international students are an enrichment and fit into the social, cultural and economic fabric of the country. But now there are too many according to the government.

Recruiting foreign students has become so profitable that it is being abused, says Marc Miller, Canada’s Minister of Immigration and Asylum. “Enough is enough.”

Concern at universities

The government is therefore allowing fewer student visas. By 2024, the number of international students will go down 35 percent to about 360 thousand. The measure does not apply to master’s and doctoral students

The Canadian Universities Association reacts with concern, but is pleased that master’s and doctoral education will be out of harm’s way. (HOP, BB)
