Bottle of gin marks new Laga building

To celebrate the start of construction on the new building for the Laga rowing club, Laga members buried a time capsule on Friday 19 September. The capsule contained, among other things, a bottle of Bokma gin. “That’s our house drink,” says external commissioner Babeth Sterk.

Construction of the new premises in Nieuwe Haven began in the second week of September. On Friday 19 September, the club marked the start of construction with a symbolic transfer of soil. Joost Snepvangers from the municipality of Delft presented a pot of soil to Laga president Emilie Westerling. A Polaroid photo was taken of the soil transfer, which was then placed in a time capsule in the ground, along with a letter to future Laga members, a Laga tie and the Bokma bottle.

Long history

In 2019, Laga signed an agreement with the municipality of Delft and the province of South Holland for the new location, after it became apparent that expansion of the striking clubhouse on Nieuwelaan was not possible. The future clubhouse will be built by J.P. van Eesteren from Gouda and should be ready for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The rowing club did not want to disclose the total cost of the construction. According to Omroep Delft, Laga has borrowed one and a half million euros for the new building, with TU Delft acting as guarantor. Due to the construction work, the boat belonging to rugby club Thor has had to be moved.
