Blind Date ends in a draw!

With fl. 100 guilders of our money, Page 4’s first Blind Daters hit the town for dinner, a movie and drinks. We interviewed them separately to discover if it was a night of passion, or of bored clock-watching; the time of their lives, or a nightmare in pizzeria.

Samuel Scherrer (28), from Switzerland, is an Architecture exchange-student from ETH Zurich. Lara van den Bosch (24) is Dutch; she studies Civil Engineering.

Dating History:

Samuel: I’m experienced. I lived in Finland, where women really go for it. Swiss women, though, act like they’ve just been taken out of the freezer.

Lara: I recently had a bad experience with an Italian guy, so no more Italians! There’re plenty of guys in Delft, but I especially like meeting foreigners.

Motivation:

Samuel: Just looking for adventure abroad, and who knows… maybe she’s the one, although I’m not expecting to find my future wife.

Lara: I’m not looking for Mr. Right. I never blind-dated before; it’s a new experience. Foreign students have different perspectives, so it’ll be interesting.

Preparations:

Samuel: I wore my sharpest outfit, all black. I was nervous, but not sweating.

Lara: I just went as myself, dressed how I always dress. I wasn’t nervous, just excited, curious.

First Impression:

Samuel: When I met Lara at the restaurant, I thought: Attractive, nice eyes, and not too tall, which I like, because most Dutch women are Amazons. Friendly, too, she even buttered a piece of bread for me.

Lara: I felt neutral about his appearance. He looked okay, not disgusting or anything. He was natural, friendly and polite.

Dinner:

Samuel: Conversation was easy, although I’ve forgotten most of it. I do remember noticing that Lara had blue hands, which was worrying, as it might’ve been something infectious. Later, we figured out it was dye from her new gloves.

Lara: We had good talks. He didn’t talk like an arty architect. Actually, he behaved like an engineer. He was reserved, friendly, and very different from Dutch TU guys, who often seem sex-obsessed.

Movie:

Samuel: We saw ‘O Brother Where Art Thou.’ I didn’t try to put my arm around her, though. After the movie, she rode on the back of my bike, singing country songs from the film. It was late, the streets were dark and snowy… it was pretty romantic.

Lara: He didn’t try anything. No tension in the dark cinema. I laughed more than he did, though, especially at the film’s funny music.

Nightcap:

Samuel: We went to a bar. Then we went back to her place, she showed me around, and then we kissed… three times, on the cheeks. And that was that. I biked home.

Lara: I felt comfortable with Sam. He didn’t drop any hints or come on to me. I gave him the usual three Dutch kisses and he left.

Verdict:

Samuel: Lara’s really nice, but not my type. She’s a rational engineer type, not sharing my interest in art and aesthetics. She thinks the Civil Engineering building is ‘ugly’, whereas I like it. I also like women to dress up, wearing fancy accessories, Swiss-style. That’s not Lara’s style: she’s not sloppy, just plainly dressed. She’s idealistic; I’m pragmatic. And that I’ve forgotten most of our conversations probably says enough.

Lara: Sam wasn’t Mr. Right. No sparks, but I’d blind date again. My ideal man is more extroverted, a bit crazy. I guess I’m doomed to being attracted to hot-blooded Latin types. It was a fun, multi-cultural experience, not a romantic one.
