Grants for short-term study in Britain.

The British Council and Nuffic are jointly offering grants to enable Dutch students to visit the UK to study aspects of contemporary British culture and society. We expect the majority of the applications to originate in the following field: the arts (visual, performing and media), humanities, social sciences and geographical sciences).

These grants are intended for students who:

* are in the final year(s) of their study at a Dutch university or HBO institution;

* wish to study some aspect of contemporary British culture and/or society by doing either research or a traineeship;

* have been accepted as a trainee or research student by a relevant UK organisation;

* propose to stay in the UK for a minimum of 1 month and a maximum of 4 months;

* are supported by their home institution in this endeavour;

* have Dutch nationality.

The grant is a contribution towards the extra cost of a students stay in the UK. The maximum individual award is Dfl. 3500,-.

Deadline for visits between August 2001-Januari 2002: June 2001; for visits between January-August 2002: November 2001.

Your application will be judged principally on the quality of your proposal, but your academic and/or professional track record will be taken into full account.

Award

The European Commission has launched the Archimedes Prize. This is an award for undergraduate students of higher education institutions in Europe having developed original scientific ideas or concepts in areas which are relevant to the advancement of European science. The aims of this award include the importance of raising public awareness of the importance of science, and the need to encourage young people to take up careers in science. This is reflected by the fact that Archimedes Prize winners will be awarded funds to develop their future scientific careers (i.e. which could be put towards postgraduate/doctoral or other courses). There are 3 first prizes of 60.000 Euro per project, 3 second prizes of 50.000 Euro per project and 3 third prizes of 40.000 Euro per project.

Students are invited to present a project that they have completed on one of the following topics, which have been selected for this year’s prize: concepts to aid disabled people; desertification and drought; mathematical modelling for social and economic sciences; new medicines from natural sources.

Applications can be made by individuals or by groups of students, who must be nationals of a Member of Associated State, or have been residing in the EU for at least the last five years.

The deadline for applications is 31 July.
