The city council recommends Alexander Pechtold as the new mayor of Delft. The municipality reported this in a press release on Thursday. Pechtold will probably replace the outgoing Marja van Bijsterveldt from September 4th.
The Confidential Committee that recommended him is pleased with Pechtold as a candidate for the mayoralty. He has ‘extensive political and administrative experience at both local and national level, […] an extensive national network but also ties to the city’. The swearing-in is scheduled to take place at a council meeting on 4 September.
Most people will know Pechtold as a former D66 party leader and member of parliament. He is currently director of the CBR (Central Office for Driving Licences). Pechtold was born in Delft, but he grew up in Rhoon.
Pechtold is the successor to current mayor Marja van Bijsterveldt. She announced in November that she will quit from 2 September 2025, as she wants more time for herself and her family.
