“Since I started my bachelor’s in 2011, I have always done things on the side because I think it’s important to become more than an engineer. I was active on a student committee with my fraternity but after seven years you’ve kind of seen it all. So I wanted to move on to something else and also to improve myself as a person.
I’ve always been interested in politics and last year there was a point where I decided I wanted to become a member of a political party so I did some research just before the state elections. I read all of the available information and GroenLinks made a very fresh impression on me at that time.
‘I want to give students and young people a voice’
I think a council should be a representation of the people living in the area. Something like one in five people in Delft is a student so that’s why I think it’s important to see that reflected in the parties. I want to give students and young people a voice.
People don’t realise that the elections for the municipality are much more open than for the state. There are many internationals that can vote, but they don’t know that. The information you might receive on voting is only in Dutch so it can be challenging. The municipality is not just here for Dutch citizens, it’s for all citizens of Delft.
We want to get them involved in the process so we’re hosting an information event next week to help people understand their right to vote. We would like everyone to vote for us, but the most important thing is that they go out and vote.”
