We all have days when we can’t be bothered to cook and we want a cheap and easy alternative for a warm meal. Eating out in the Netherlands can be expensive, but don’t worry, you don’t need to wait for a special occasion to justify the expense.
Delft has plenty of places that won’t stretch your student budget to the limit, and where you can get dinner for less than €10.
Student fraternities
If you’ve been following Delta’s ‘Meet the Fraternity’ series, you’ll already know that many of the student fraternities in Delft have an open dining room one or more evenings per week at around 18:00. These meals are not exclusive to members, and you’ll often find other students and non-students joining the table for a cheap and easy dinner. For just a few euros, €4.00-€5.00, you can get a three course meal. It won’t be fancy, but it will do the job. Generally starting with some sort of soup, a main meal such as pasta or chilli, and a dessert. There’s usually a vegetarian option too. As an added bonus, you may even make some new friends. You can just turn up, although most fraternities prefer a headsup from diners beforehand to help with planning. Check the website for each before you go to see the daily menus.
Takeaway
Pizza places and snack bars are plentiful in Delft. For something different, try Rice & Pasta on Nieuwstraat in the centre. Meals start at €4, with nothing more than €9.50 on the menu, and they sell stamppot and salads as well as rice and pasta. For students there’s a savings card available, and after a few visits you’ll receive a discount. “Ask an employee for a card. You don’t need to fill anything in, so you can begin saving straightaway,” they stated.
Counter service restaurants
Restaurants without table service are generally cheaper. IKEA is always a good bet, with Swedish and Dutch meals on offer. Their famous meat balls are always a winner, and there’s a varying seasonal menu too. Prices come in at around €4-€7 for a main meal, and their restaurant is open daily. Minos Greek Grill Restaurant on the main market square is also pretty reliable for a well-prepared, quick and affordable meal. Daily Wok on Oude Langendijk, and Eazie on Binnenwatersloot, are both oriental fast-food places where you can create your own dish with a starch, meat, veg and sauce for around €5-€7, and it’ll be stir fried freshly for you.
Table service restaurants
THUIS by Ladera on Oosteinde was voted ‘Leukste restaurant van Delft 2015’ and patrons report a warm welcome and decent sized portions. “Tasty Dutch food in a cozy family atmosphere for a Dutch price!” is how they describe what they offer. There are toys for kids, books on the shelves, and a garden to enjoy, too. The food is simple but good, and a great way to familiarise yourself with Dutch cuisine. Sample offerings include different kinds of stamppot with sausage, a meatball or schnitzel for around €7-€9. Cafe de Beierd on Burgwal is another option for a good dinner, if you steer clear of the main menu and pick one of the daily specials. There are five dishes daily at different price levels, starting at €8, just ask the staff what’s available. There’s a good choice of beers here too, in a pub atmosphere. For Italian, Stromboli on the Markt has plenty of pizza and pasta on the menu for under €10; the quality is consistently good, and the house wine is perfectly palatable too.
