Starting in September 2026, students in higher education will pay 2,694 euros in annual tuition fees. This represents an increase of nearly one hundred euros. The fee is increasing in line with the relatively high inflation of the past year.
In the current academic year, students pay 2,530 euros and in the 2025/2026 academic year, that amount will rise to 2,601 euros. The 2,694 euros figure has been calculated by HOP based on inflation data from Statistics Netherlands (CBS), which published the April figures on Friday. The final amount may differ by a few euros.
Bases on inflation rate
Until 2022, the new tuition fee was based on the inflation rate of a single month—April. The difference was usually a few dozen euros. But in April 2022, inflation was exceptionally high (nearly ten percent), and politicians were alarmed that tuition fees would increase by more than 200 euros.
Minister Dijkgraaf quickly adjusted the policy: from then on, the ministry would base the tuition fee on inflation over the entire year, to avoid sharp peaks and valleys.
Student grant also increased
This concerns the statutory tuition fee for students who have not yet completed a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The government no longer subsidizes a second degree, so students pursuing one must pay the much higher institutional tuition fee. There are exceptions for those retraining for careers in healthcare or education.
The basic student grant is also increased annually to compensate for rising prices. Due to the extreme inflation in 2022, students even received an additional inflation compensation, but the minister discontinued that last year. (HOP, BB / Delta, KB)
