TU student Abdelkader Karbache is on the Groenlinks-PvdA candidate list

A name familiar to many TU students appears on the left-wing Groenlinks-PvdA political party list for the parliamential elections on 29 October. Master’s student Abdelkader Karbache is listed at number 72 on the candidate list, the party announced in an email to its members on Thursday. Karbache is listed as a so-called lijstduwer (list pusher): he is not expected to enter parliament. Lijstduwers are usually included on the list because they are expected to attract a lot of votes.

Karbache (24) made a name for himself last academic year as chair of the National Student Union (LSVb). In that role, he regularly appeared in the media. Previously, he was a board member of the Delft student union VSSD and a member of the central student council of the TU. Outside the university, he is an active member of the PvdA, having held various roles over the years. He is currently a representative of their The Hague faction. In addition to all this, he is studying for a master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Technology at TU Delft.

Karbache considers it a great honour to be the party’s candidate, he writes on the website of the combined left-wing party. The student, who comes from the relativity poor Schilderswijk neighbourhood in The Hague, was motivated by his background. “As a child in the Schilderswijk, I quickly learned that hard work is not always enough when the system works against you. […] We knew we didn’t have the same opportunities as others […]. It was only later that I realised how unfair that actually is.”
