Top-level party: ETV members abseil down their own faculty building

What do you do when your student association is celebrating its anniversary and is based in a 90-metre-high building? You go abseiling. On 8 June, the big day finally arrived for twenty members of the Elektrotechnische Vereeiniging, after first the weather and then the hands of the EEMCS clock had thrown a spanner in the works.

The Elektrotechnische Vereeniging is celebrating its 120th anniversary, and that is not going unnoticed. At the beginning of May, for example, the students set up a gigantic robot chessboard in front of the town hall on the Markt, and a few weeks later they drew attention with the inauguration of Ilke Ercan as the first female honorary member.

At the end of May, the next highlight was to follow: abseiling from the 90-metre-high home base of the study association, the iconic high-rise of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS). However, on the initially selected date, 27 May, it was rainy. The day after that, the EEMCS clock had stopped, with both hands in their widest position, preventing the abseilers from passing.

But on 8 June the time had come. Under the supervision of instructors from the Delft student climbing association Yeti, from 11:00 AM onwards initially twelve drawn ETV members were able to descend, each accompanied by an instructor.

Jochem Baas, ETV Secretary and Vice-President, later wrote in a short note to Delta that it all proceeded quite smoothly: five minutes to get set up, ten to fifteen minutes to descend, and then the next person. As a result, not only the twelve selected students but also the party committee, several board members and the EWI communications adviser were able to abseil. By 4:00 PM, everyone was safely on the ground.
