Temporary increase of basic grant

Temporary increase of basic grant

Due to rising inflation, the Dutch Cabinet wants to increase the new basic grant for students living away from home in vocational and higher education by 165 euros for a year. The temporary supplement comes on top of the basic grant of 280 euros per month that the cabinet plans to introduce from 1 September 2023, writes the national broadcaster NOS based on sources in The Hague. The measure would cost half a billion euros. The amount of the allowance takes into account the ten per cent increase in the minimum wage. The grant for students living with their parents will not be increased. According to government parties VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie, parents will be sufficiently compensated with other measures.

Next academic year
The surcharge will only apply for the 2023/24 academic year because the government hopes that the ongoing, extremely high inflation will eventually start to subside. Next Tuesday, on Budget Day (Prinsjesdag), the measures will be officially announced. At the end of August, RTL News reported that in the new national budget, the cabinet wanted to allocate 250 million euros per year to increase the basic grant for students living away from home for one year. Exact amounts were not mentioned then. (HOP, PvT)
