While TU Delft finished second last year, this year the university has dropped seven places in the SustainaBul sustainability ranking. Just like last year, university of applied sciences Van Hall Larenstein takes the gold.
For the fourteenth time, the organisation Studenten voor Morgen has assessed sustainability in higher education. What is the vision of universities and universities of applied sciences on this topic? How is sustainability integrated into the curriculum, and how is it reflected in campus operations?
The students verify the information provided by the educational institutions and sometimes request clarification. This year, they used a slightly different methodology, which also looked at areas such as pedagogy and student participation. Yet the winner remains the same as in the past three years.
This year, TU Delft shared ninth place. Erasmus University Rotterdam and Utrecht University of Applied Sciences earned the same number of points.
Best Practice
The ranking aims to drive change. The students hope that educational institutions will share knowledge and make education more sustainable. A similar initiative exists for vocational education (MBO).
A jury also awards a prize each year for an outstanding project in the field of sustainability. This time, the ‘best practice’ award goes to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, which has set up a legal clinic dedicated to climate issues: the Climate Change & Sustainability Law Clinic. (HOP, BB)
