Regardless of whether your status is ‘single’, ‘in a relationship’ or ‘complicated’ there’s something for everyone in Delft. In 2016, Valentine’s day fell on a weekend, and there was plenty going on. Read on to find out more.
Special events
Rietveld Theater had a saxophone orchestra on Saturday morning, followed by an open podium in the evening. The annual Blues Festival Delft ran all weekend with 70 performances in 33 locations, and TU Delft’s own Doc Curran & Friends performed at De Koperen Kat on Sunday afternoon. Biercafe ‘t Proeflokaal on Gasthuislaan held a pop quiz for duos on Sunday at 14:30, first prize won a visit to Warsteiner brewery. For culture seekers, Sunday was the last day of the Jan Schoonhoven exhibition at Museum Prinsenhof. Schoonhoven is a Delft artist known as the Vermeer of the twentieth century, and in collaboration with TU Delft a special light simulation showed the influence lighting has on the perception of his work. If you asked for the special Valentine’s offer at the counter with your partner you got free entry.
Hearts and flowers
Looking for something traditional? Xenos and Hema had some Valentine’s gifts that didn’t cost more than the small change in your pocket. At the Jumbo a single red rose cost €2. All three open on Sundays for those that find themselves stuck at the last minute. If you were willing to splash out a little more, chocolateries De Lelie and Leonidas had some tempting displays. The Saturday market flower stall is an affordable option for a bouquet. Other florists have special arrangements. Eating Perhaps food is the way to the heart of your loved one? Many restaurants and cafes had special Valentine’s Day menus. You could start the day with brunch and blues music at either Kobus Kuch or Vlaanderen on the Beestenmarkt. Royal Delft offered a Valentine’s high tea at 14:00 in addition to workshops and tours. For an extra special dinner date, Theater de Veste had a pop-up restaurant on Friday and Saturday evening, where €22.50 got you a four-course meal with Italian love scenes staged live with each course.
For singles
Eve Ensler’s powerful play ‘The Vagina Monologues’ was performed on Sunday at Noordwal 117 in The Hague. The evening raised funds for the women’s charity Mama Cash, with a suggested donation of €15. Alternatively, you could grab a friend and step into one of Vermeer’s paintings at Something Extra at Oude Langendijk 36; choose a costume and dress up as the girl with the pearl earring or the milkmaid for a fun photo shoot on Saturday or Sunday. On Thursday, February 28, TEDxDelft hosted a storytelling event especially for the lonely hearts club at the Rietveld Theater.
Something different
The multidimensional woman carried out tarot readings to answer all of your questions about love on the Friday for €10. Jan Jense was at The Read Shop Kempers in the Hoven Passage on Saturday from 10:00 to 16:00 ready to help write a romantic poem for your loved one. Or you could even learn how to play the harmonica in a Saturday afternoon workshop at the Hampshire Hotel.
