Why buy when you can rent? This week we look at electronics, toys and other rental options that leave a lighter footprint on your wallet and on the environment.
Appliance reliance
Just moved into a student apartment with nothing but an old stove? Don’t break the bank just yet. Since 1989, Splash Lease has been renting out electronic appliances—only to student apartments and dorms.
Appliances include washing machines, kitchen hobs, dishwashers, dryers, refrigerators, and televisions. “The price depends on your budget and the duration of your contract. You can rent something for €10 a month, or, if you want something with a higher energy efficiency, then it’s a bit more,” said Marije de Groot, the manager. For instance, a Bosch hob and oven costs €16 per month for a one-year contract and a 32 inch LG TV costs €13. The process is simple, order online and have it delivered. The company also looks after set up and repairs for free.

DIY parties
There are a number of places that rent out party accessories, from decor and lighting to furniture and cutlery. For instance, at KIJK Partyverhuur you can rent folding chairs (90 cents per chair/per day), a small fridge (€17.50), a basic beer tap (€15) or one with a sink (€45), tents (€60 upwards), cups and saucers (30 cents) and even a coat rack and a red carpet for all those celebrities you might invite. Everything can be ordered online. You can rent sound and music equipment at Robust Sound. Feestartikelenhuis Brehm (closing soon) also has a lot of options – including inflatable dolls of Sarah and Abraham and themed costumes for hire.

Christmas every three weeks
At SpeelOke the toy library, children can rent toys for a small annual membership fee of €10. Following that, you pay 50 cents, €1 or €1.50 per toy being borrowed. Puzzles and other small toys cost 50 cents, but Playmobil or more expensive toys cost €1.50. Kids can borrow up to three toys at a time and keep them for three weeks. “Children want new toys every few weeks, and that can be very expensive. This is more economical and also good for the environment. Playing is very important for the development of a child’s imagination and this way we can keep them engaged with new toys,” said Yvonne van den Hurk, volunteer at SpeelOke.
Managed entirely by volunteers, both their locations currently open only on Saturdays.
Motorhome holidays
Camptoo is a rental agency that works with dealers of campers and caravans around the country. They also work with individual owners who can rent out their campers via the website. If you’re lucky you might even find an offer as low as €40 a night. If you’re looking for something based right here in Delft (and have a bigger budget), try Duijndam Delft Caravans & Campers. Their rental cost for a week ranges upwards of €900 for state-of-the-art wheels.
Typically meant for four people, some models can accommodate up to five travellers. “The price includes inventory such as plastic cutlery, pots and pans, furniture and other things you might need along the way,” explained Sjoerd Verhaar, from the administration office of DD. Keep in mind, all companies have specific rules about insurance, license and the amount of deposit required. Be sure to ask about that.
