Student union opens hotline for police violence

The police should not be using force to remove protesters from university campuses, says the Dutch Student Union (LSVb), which has launched an anonymous reporting point for such incidents. University administrators argue that in some cases, they feel compelled to call in the police.

Last week, injuries were reported during the removal of pro-Palestinian protests in The Hague and Nijmegen. The LSVb finds this unacceptable: “Students who speak out deserve to be heard—not met with batons or police dogs.”

The union says it increasingly hears from students who feel unsafe during protests. With the collected reports, the LSVb hopes to put pressure on university boards to engage in dialogue and avoid involving the police. (HOP, OL)
