Last week the first issue of Page 4 of Delta came out and I am very pleased that the English page came true. Especially, because I am one of the people who stressed the importance of having such a page in the newspaper of an international university.
So, this was the first time that the MSc-students and English-speaking staff had their own page in Delta. But I was disappointed with what I found on page 4. And not only me, also many MSc-students told me, and Delta, that they were disappointed.
The article itself is sometimes negative, sometimes positive. But why such a negative eye-catching title? Not very stimulating for all the people and students working hard to make the MSc-programme successful. Furthermore, the title does not reflect the contents of the interview, and it is bad publicity for the MSc-programme, especially to the organizations who support the MSc-programme such as Nuffic and the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. Also, the article did not make clear that the problems are solved. Ubaldo was also unsatisfied about the negative tenor of the article, because he had told the interviewer that this was a pilot programme, and that he is satisfied now. He literally said to the interviewer: ‘what I got here I wouldn’t get it in any other place…now I am happy’. Although he had to face many problems at the beginning, the people at the faculty really worked hard to help him and provide him a good quality MSc-course.
When MSc-students encounter problems they can go to their faculty coordinator, to the faculty student advisors, to the MSc-office or to the central counselor. They all take their criticism seriously. The MSc-programme is new, nobody says it is perfect (yet). Criticism, when realistic and fair, is always welcome and helpful, but to compare TU Delft with a bunch of “glossy brochures” is over the top. Many MSc-students emphasized that they came to TU Delft because they thought (and still think) that it is a good university, famous in the world. We, from the MSc-office, want to contribute to establish the good reputation of TU Delft abroad, and we hope that Page 4 of Delta can contribute to this as well.
