Science funding body NWO is awarding 149 Vidi grants this year to talented researchers. Sixteen of these grants have been awarded to scientists from TU Delft. Each recipient will receive up to €850,000.
In total, NWO is awarding nearly fifty more grants than last year.
Of the 778 proposals submitted, 19 percent were successful. Women submitted slightly fewer applications than men, but had a higher success rate: 21 percent of female applicants were awarded grants, compared to 18 percent of male applicants.
- Curious who the sixteen TU researchers are? TU Delft has listed them.
The Vidi grants are part of NWO’s Talent Programme, alongside the Veni and Vici grants. These grants are intended to give researchers the freedom “to pursue their own research driven by creativity and passion.”
Times of cutbacks
This time, NWO increased the budget to honour more proposals. With this, the funding body aims to “give talented researchers a helping hand during times of cutbacks in research and science.” Utrecht University secured the most grants, closely followed by TU Delft and the University of Amsterdam.
The selection process consists of two rounds: the pre-proposal and the full application. Researchers first submit a brief proposal, and most are eliminated in this round. Those who proceed then submit a detailed application. About half of this group received funding. (HOP, NB/Delta, KB)
