Caroline Hummels, of the Industrial Design faculty, believes that professional designers can communicate with consumers by using sign language.
Consumers often have difficulties making a drawing of how they want a product to look. However, using gestures, they can more easily express what they mean. Although it%s possible for other people to interpret these gestures, Hummels discovered that making guidelines for computers is more problematic, because the interpretation is too dependent on the context.
Glass with properties of aluminium
Dr. Fred Veer, of the faculty of Architecture, developed a new construction material. It looks like glass, but is as strong as aluminium. The composite consists of five thin layers of polycarbonate and five thin layers of a special glass which is plunged in a bath with special salt at a temperature of 400 degrees Celsius. If a crack occurs, it won’t spread quickly because energy can flow from the glass, via the glue, to the polycarbonate.
Cellular phones for Mechanical and Maritime engineering
Due to the internal relocation of offices, many people in the Mechanical and Maritime Engineering building are difficult to reach by phone. Co-ordinator of the relocation, W. Rietbroek, hopes the problems will be solved by the end of the week. Until then, Rietbroek has made fifteen cellular phones available.
