In its annual list of the 10 most promising technological advances that could lead to breakthroughs that will truly change how we live and work, the journal MIT Technological Review puts QUTech’s quantum internet at number one. “An internet based on quantum physics will soon enable inherently secure communication”, the journal writes about this TU Delft research.
A team of researchers led by Stephanie Wehner is building a network that connects four cities in the Netherlands entirely through quantum technology. Messages sent over this network will be unhackable. Entangled particles are difficult to create and harder still to transmit over long distances. Wehner’s team has demonstrated that it can send them at distances exceeding 1.5 kilometres, and the team is confident that it can set up a quantum link between Delft and The Hague by the end of the year. Read here what we wrote about this research. (TvD)
