Petition against sexual harassment

Being made passes at as you walk by, being asked sexually oriented questions, unwanted touching: a female student at the University of Twente is fed up with it. She started a petition which she hopes will encourage the municipality of Enschede to tackle sexual harassment on the streets.  

In the city centre of Enschede, sexual harassment is the rule rather than the exception, the student told the university magazine U-Today. There, women claim that they are harassed daily by men on the street – not only in the evening, but also during the day. “If you were a little older, I’d have you,” the student hears. Or, “Let me eat your pussy”. Sometimes the men approach women improperly come at women or touch them. 

The student wants the municipality to intervene, for example by having more police surveillance. Her petition can count on a lot of support. Within one day, the counter was already at over 5,700 signatures. (HOP, Evelien Flink)
