After two weeks of games, lectures and parties, the introduction for internationals ended with project presentations. In groups, the students made presentations about something that could improve their past, present or future lives.
The best group of the Past competition was Noordwijk 2. It made a video about Margaret E. Knight, the inventor of the paper bag.
Terneuzen 2 won the Present competition. It invented the smart lock, a bicycle lock that whistles and flashes light when you ask the app. That way, you can always find your bike. The lock can only open and close with your campus card.
Zwolle 2 had the best Future presentation about student life on Mars. We are always thinking of ways to change the planet so that humans can live there. But what if we modify the human body in a way that we can live on Mars? So the group thought of prosthetics inside the body, genome engineering, mechanics and contact lenses equipped with projectors that generate images in augmented reality.
After the three presentations, it was time to vote for the best idea. The audience voted via smartphone and could see live on screen which group was winning. It was clear: the Smart Lock won with 52 percent of the votes. “It was the most useful one,” says Vanessa from Spain. “It is a real case and a real product, not as imaginary as the paper bag or life on Mars.” “I always find it hard to find my bike,” her friend Olga adds. “This is a great idea!”
Sartaj and Jonas from Germany also found it the best idea. “I think it will turn into a real product,” Sartaj says. The guys enjoyed the introduction programme. “When I left for the Netherlands, everyone said the first weeks would be the worst,” Jonas says. “You would sit alone in your room, without any friends. That’s not true: the only time I was in my room, was when I slept. You meet so many international people, it is so great. These were the best two weeks of my life!”
