Each new resident of OD 18 makes a new nameplate for himself at this Virgilian bastion of maleness situated on the Oude Delft. The new housemates place their nameplates at the bottom of the list beside the front door, with the rest of nameplates ascending in order of seniority.
“The names at the top of the list can overrule those below them,” explains Gerben Smit, whose own nameplate is somewhere in the middle of this hierarchical list. “For outsiders, this may seem authoritarian, but it’s a simple way to end discussions, such who will live in which room. Another benefit is that there’s always an up-to-date list of nameplates next to the door.”
The old nameplates of former members are hung in chronological order on the wall of building’s wide entranceway. Smit doesn’t know when this tradition began. “The guys whose nameplates those were, are now in their late thirties, so the tradition must’ve started about 20 years ago.”
In addition to the nameplates of the 12 students currently residing in OD 18, there is also a nameplate for the housecat, Beerheer, who has lived there for two years. Smit: “When we first took the cat in, we gave him his own nameplate, made of leather, and he has already quickly risen up the list. Beerheer will outlast us all. He’s named after a fictional housemate, on whose name all kinds of things are ordered. That cat receives lots of mail.”
The nameplates are made out of various materials, ranging from aluminum, wood and steel, to marble, cement, mirrored glass and the ‘urinal stall” porcelain of Smits own nameplate. He used a drill to engrave his name on the plate. The plaque made of epoxy mounted parchment next to the door is a replica: the original was stolen. Some names are found on many nameplates at the top of the list. Former students? “If you do well in your studies at TU Delft,” Smit remarks, “you’ll absolutely never get to the top.”
Van der Wijk ontving de prijs voor zijn afstudeerwerk over het dynamisch balanceren van mechanismen en robots. Hij studeerde 9 april 2008 af bij de afdeling biomedical engineering van Werktuigbouwkunde, Maritieme Techniek & Technische Materiaalwetenschappen. Dr.ir. Just Herder (3mE) was zijn begeleider.
De ‘Wim van der Hoek Constructeursprijs’ wordt jaarlijks toegekend voor het beste afstudeerwerk op het gebied van werktuigkundig construeren. De prijs is vernoemd naar prof. Wim van der Hoek die in de periode van 1962 – 1985 op de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven de basis heeft gelegd voor wat gezien wordt als de Nederlandse methode voor werktuigbouwkundige constructies.
Volkert van der Wijk is behalve ingenieur ook beeldend kunstenaar. Op zijn site www.kineticart.nl zijn verschillende ludieke constructies van hem te zien. Ook werkt Van der Wijk samen met schrijver en columnist Henk Hofland aan zogenaamde Sisyphusmachines met als einddoel een Reusachtige Plonsmachine.
De prijs bestaat uit een oorkonde, en trofee en een geldbedrag van 1.000 euro dat door het 3TU Centre ‘High Tech Systems’ ter beschikking wordt gesteld.
