Not just looking in the rear-view mirror

Counting publications is becoming less important. The Executive Board also wants research plans to be judged. “We’re changing our research portfolio with a small jump, but we don’t want to make unrest a new policy course,” says Van Luijk.

“To prevent great shocks, we’re going to evaluate more frequently.” Van Luijk has therefore established a new commission, with Prof. Dalmijn as president, which is going to develop a new model for allocating funds within the TU.

This model must not only distribute money by looking in the rear- view mirror at past achievements, but also by judging new plans. Commission DeWilde, which prepared the portfolio discussions, proposed to distribute 40 percent of research on the basis of the number of publications and evaluation reports. According to the commission, another 40 percent must be distributed based on new plans. The 20 percent that’s left over will be reserved for renewing initiatives.

However, Van Luijk gave the commission free rein. Also the fifty-fifty distribution between research and education is not set in stone, according to Van Luijk.
