Meeting materials The ‘Association for Materials Science’ is hosting a special meeting for young materials scientists. The meeting, which is entitled ‘Meeting Materials’, will give young PhD students and materials industry personnel the opportunity to meet key people in the Dutch materials science sector.
Four ‘Masters in Materials’ will present their most important research and developments at the ‘Meeting Materials’ event on 23 March 2006: Willem van Dreumel was one of the driving forces behind applying composites in the aircraft industry; Els Zijlstra is a specialist in innovative materials and founded the bureau ‘Materia’ in 1998; Boud Vogelesang had a long and successful career at the TU’s Aerospace Engineering faculty, during which time he developed the material Glare, which is now being used in the construction of the latest generation of aircraft; and Gert Berendsen, who is a Senior R&D Director of Dow Chemical and works in the field of polymers.

Team Bite
Team Bite, the team that is representing TU Delft in the Battle of the Universities, is leading the competition with 26% of the votes cast on the Battle website. Tilburg University is in second place. The Battle of the Universities (or Academic Year Prize) is a competition in which teams must try to produce the best translation of scientific research for a broad public. The first prize is 100,000 euros. Teams of researchers and students from 14 Dutch universities are competing. The Battle of the Universities runs until 1 June 2006. TU Delft’s Team ‘Bite’ (Biologically Inspired Technology) is a project that aims to introduce biologically-inspired designs in biomedical technology to the general public. Team Bite plans to build a doughnut-shaped vehicle that can navigate through a 2.5 meter high, transparent model colon. It is hoped that this demonstration model – which is based on a colonic examination robot currently being developed in the BmechE department . will capture the attention of the general public.

Sustainable mobility
Shell Netherlands will invest 3 million euros in a research and development project at TU Delft in the field of sustainable mobility. Last week the TU’s faculties received a ‘call for proposals’, inviting their scientific staffs to issue research proposals. To receive funding, project proposals must be completely new and focused on sustainable mobility. A proposal may not be part of an existing research project. Researchers must submit their proposals to the ‘Shell/TU Delft Sustainable Mobility Programme’ before 31 March 2006.

Harvard soap
Lawrence Summers, the President of Harvard University, has resigned. His five years in office were rife with controversy, as comments he made offended women and minorities. Summers had publicly stated that there are genetic differences between men and women, and that this why there are more men than women working in the science and technology fields. Summers apologized for his comments, but his position was untenable. Summers has been replaced by Derek Bok, who was previously president of Harvard from 1971 to 1991.
Tram line
The construction of the tram line 19, which will pass through he TU Delft campus, has begun. The tram line is set for completion in 2008. On Sunday, the participating parties in the project, including TU Delft and Delft municipality, will be in Leidschendam for a ceremony marking the start of the project. Leidschendam will be the starting point for the tram, and the high-tech park Technopolis the last stop on the line. There will be three stops on the TU campus.
