The reasons for the diminishing employment prospects include the current economic crisis and the continuing rise in the number of university graduates. Architecture and civil engineers will be hit hardest, although it was just two years ago that job prospects for those graduates were rated as ‘very good’.
Floris is 33. Hij geniet van het leven, geeft zijn geld liever uit aan mooie ervaringen dan aan bezit. Hij rijdt graag op zijn scooter in de zon. Maar dan wel een beetje een stille, want hij wil het meisje achterop wel kunnen verstaan.
Zes studenten industrieel ontwerpen bedachten Floris als een van de virtuele potentiële kopers van hun nieuwe eco-scooter. Voor hem ontwikkelden ze een elektrische scooter waarmee hij met een zacht fluitend geluid – ‘alsof je over een fles blaast’ – door de stad kan rijden.
De studenten ontwikkelden de scooter voor het bedrijf Ecomover. “Zij importeren nu elektrische scooters die in China in elkaar gebeunhaasd zijn”, vertelt IO-er Bram van der Grinten. “Waar bij een benzinebrommer de knalpijp zit, hebben ze een plastic plaatje gezet. Wij hebben echt een nieuw concept bedacht.”
Ze begonnen helemaal bij nul. “We hebben bedacht wat de lekkerste reiservaring zou zijn”, zegt Van der Grinten. De groep kwam uit bij een vliegend tapijt. “Je hebt vrijheid, staat niet in de file, hij kan de bestemming als het ware uit je hoofd lezen en het is niet afschrikwekkend modern.” Met die ideeën begonnen de studenten aan hun eco-scooter.
De Root – Nederlands uitgesproken – heeft een harde witte buitenkant. De binnenkant is zacht en rood. “Een veilig coconnetje”, omschrijft Van der Grinten. En comfortabel. “Duurzaamheid mag niet gepaard gaan met minder luxe”, vindt Van der Grinten. “Ik ben gegrepen door duurzaamheid, maar het slaat alleen aan als we niet hoeven inboeten op onze levensstandaard.” Bovendien moest hij herkenbaar zijn als scooter. “We wilden niet gewoon een scooter ombouwen met een elektromotor erin, maar echt een nieuw product maken” vertelt Van der Grinten. “Maar je moet toch dicht bij de belevingswereld van de potentiële kopers blijven. Anders accepteren mensen het niet. Ik denk dat we daar goed tussenin zijn gebleven.”
“De scooter is bijna helemaal cradle-to-cradle”, zegt Van der Grinten. “Alle materialen blijven eigendom van de fabriek.” Daar kunnen ze de materialen hergebruiken om nieuwe scooters te maken. Floris kan de scooter daarom alleen leasen en betaalt per maand een soort statiegeld voor zijn vervoermiddel.
Voor zijn maandbedrag zit hij lekker, op een scooter met Nederlandse maten. “We wilden echt een product voor Nederlanders maken, dus de scooter is een beetje groter dan de Italiaanse scooters.” Of hij echt goed zit, hebben de studenten getest door een model van hout te bouwen. “De eerste zat niet goed, maar die hebben we aangepast tot hij wel lekker zat.”
Met een ander model testten de ontwerpers ook de aandrijving en de rem van de scooter. Die werken niet als de meeste andere scooters met een draaiend handvat aan het stuur. De bestuurder kan versnellen door zijn gewicht naar voren te verplaatsen en tegen het stuur te duwen. Om te remmen trekt hij aan het stuur. “We dachten dat dat wel even wennen zou zijn, maar intuïtief reed iedereen er heel makkelijk op.”
Ook prettig voor de intuïtie moet het kantelsysteem van de scooter zijn. “Op een normale scooter kantel je naar achter als je versnelt en naar voren als je remt”, legt Van der Grinten uit. “En dat is tegenovergesteld wanneer je loopt. Je moet dus corrigeren.” Met een ingenieus systeem van stangen kiept de nieuwe scooter ietsje naar voren als de bestuurder versnelt.
De hippe vogels met hun Vespa’s zullen nog wel eens jaloers naar Floris kijken. Als zij met veel moeite en krassen op hun mooie schoenen hun scooter op de standaard hijsen, drukt Floris op een knopje. De scooter zakt dan rustig door zijn assen, terwijl de steuntjes aan beide kanten uitklappen. Van der Grinten: “Als je uitgereden bent, gaat de scooter eigenlijk zitten.”

Ecotax
Professor Michiel Haas delivered his inaugural lecture at TU Delft on Friday, 20 November, during which he called for an ecotax to be placed on all construction materials that are environmentally-harmful. Haas, of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences, said we must aspire towards buildings whose materials cause no environmental impact whatsoever. He calls such structures zero-material buildings: “In principle that means using renewable materials, such as wood, reed, sheep’s wool and so on. But you cannot make a building from these materials alone, so you also need other solutions, like bioplastics made from agricultural materials and other grown and harvested materials.” Haas is eager to put his theories into practice where he works: ‘TU Delft’s campus must be transformed as quickly as possible into an experimental garden for all the fascinating stuff that the TU faculties are currently developing in this field.”
Best graduate
Delft University Fund’s Mecanoo awards for the best graduates of the 2008-2009 academic year were presented last week by TU Delft’s Rector Magnificus, Jacob Fokkema. The best graduates from each of the eight faculties presented their final projects, and then the best graduate overall was chosen from these eight. And the winner was Evelien Pingen, of the faculty of Applied Physics.
Sinterklaas
Sinterklaas is coming to TU Delft on 28 November. The event is hosted by Prometheus, TU Delft’s staff association, and all university employees and their children are warmly invited. Sint and his Piets will give out presents and put on a show, including song and dance numbers and a ‘Soccer Showdown’. The Sint party is at the Aula, with the doors opening at 13.15 and the main activities starting at 14.15 hours. Tickets cost €7.50.
Osiris cometh
TU Delft students and staff can get a sneak-preview of Osiris, the new Student Information System, on 3 December. All teaching staff and students will start working with this new system as of 14 December. The system allows teachers to see students’ grades; academic counsellors to record reports from meetings with students; and students to view their study programs and register for exams. Everyone is welcome to try out this new system on December 3, between 12:00-14.00 hours, at the Aula – no appointment necessary.
Two awards
Loubna Aammari, a second-year TU Delft student studying computer science, has won the Kartini Award, given annually to the best female Dutch science and technology student of immigrant origins. The award comes with a cash prize of 1,250 euro. Aammari had an 8 average in her first-year courses. She has also received one of seven study grants worth 2,400 euro as part of the Finalist IT Group, which are given to outstanding first-year computer science students.
Intercity station
Delft has asked NS to make Delft station an intercity station. At present, the only intercity trains that stop in Delft are those to and from Den Haag Central. A Delft city official said that Delft should be granted intercity station status because accessibility via public transport is becoming increasingly important and trains with regional and interregional connections are the best alternatives to travelling by car. Delft is also part of the ‘Stedenbaan’, an initiative aimed at improving and strengthening
existing infrastructure.
