ReappointmentThe university reappointed Professor Louis de Quelerij as Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences for the period of one year as of 1 October 2010.
Prof. de Quelerij has been Dean of the faculty since October 2002. This reappointment is intended to ensure the continuity of both the implementation of the faculty’s renewal plan and of relations with the civil engineering business community.

Next year TU Delft must return 25 million euros it received for building a new faculty of Architecture. The money should be returned to the Ministry of Education. TU Delft received the funding from the former education minister to build a new faculty building that would serve as an architectural icon. The university then decided to relocate the faculty to the university’s former main administration building, and hence the government now wants its money back.
Justice university
Dutch universities and polytechnics will soon be required to report to the Immigration and Naturalization Department (IND) those international students who fail to achieve a certain number of course credits. But some educational institutes are concerned that this new law will make them ‘extensions’ of the justice department. Beginning next year, the IND will revoke international students’ residence permits if they fail to achieve more than half the required number of course credits in their study programmes.
Students detained
Last Saturday Delft police detained five young men, aged 19 to 23, including TU Delft students. The students were detained after a fight broke out at 01:00 on Crommelingplein. The reason for the fight remains unclear, but the incident occurred when another group of young men passed a student house situated on the Crommelingplein. More people were involved in the fight than those detained, and the police have not ruled making more arrests in the case.
Molybdenum-99
TU Delft’s nuclear research reactor will be used as a back-up facility for the production of the radioactive isotope molybdenum-99, when supplies run out. Molybdenum-99 is widely used in hospitals in order to locate cancer. The substance is regularly in short supply because there are only five large commercial producers worldwide, and they all produce using older reactors. TU Delft offered its reactor as a back-up facility when supplies run out. The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has accepted this offer. TU Delft will now adapt its reactor in order to start producing molybdenum-99. “The Reactor Institute Delft wishes to improve the care for cancer patients by helping to ensure that there are sufficient supplies of isotopes for medical use”, says Professor Tim van der Hagen, director of the Reactor Institute Delft.
Alumni symposium
TU Delft will host an alumni symposium titled ‘Cross border Cooperation’ on 8 October 2010, to which all former graduates and PhD students are invited and where they will be able to gain new insights, share their expertise, and intensify professional relationships with employees and young alumni-to-be throughout the campus. Advanced technological solutions are often the result of cross border cooperation: between disciplines, between science and practice, or between cultures. Socially relevant innovation can benefit from a fruitful exchange of ideas in various fields. The university hopes participants will share their thoughts on various research topics and ways of cross border cooperation. Some topics covered during the symposium will include DRIs, sustainability and economic viability. Je moet nog wel een formulier invullen voor deze vacature, zegt de secretaresse op het faculteitssecretariaat. Heb ik al gedaan, zeg ik. Kijk maar, hij zit hier achter vastgeniet. Nee, zegt ze, zo’n elektronisch formulier. We hebben nu een beheerst vacaturebeleid hè? En niet boos worden want ik word ook maar gestuurd, ik krijg al genoeg over me heen zo.
Ik word niet boos. Het zal wel moeten, dat bezuinigen. Als je niet op de centen let heb je ineens een gat van negen miljoen. Zo schijnt dat te werken. Toch? Ik ga met mijn vierde kop koffie terug naar mijn kamer en open het toegemailde formulier. Ik kijk naar de eerste vragen.
Verantwoording noodzaak voor deze beslissing, staat er, en: Risico indien niet toegekend.
Ik voel me langzaam nijdig worden. De adrenaline spuit door mijn aderen, galopperend op een golf cafeïne. Wat nou noodzaak verantwoorden? Ik wil iemand omdat het nodig is.Omdat wij ons hier sinds de OOD het schompes werken. Als er eentje weggaat dan moet ik een nieuwe. Is dat raar ofzo?? Roffudomme nog aan toe. En zal ik je eens laten zien welk risico we lopen als de vacature niet wordt toegekend. Hebben jullie je eigen tandjes nog? Zal ik jullie dat eens persoonlijk komen uitleggen? Nou, dan heb je aan één pleister niet genoeg hoor, laat ik je dat zeggen!
Ho, stop. Ik ben een beheerst mens en ik ga dit professioneel en intelligent aanpakken. Even diep ademhalen. En voorlopig even geen koffie meer. Met twee vingers tik ik een paar volzinnen. En voor ik het weet, krijg ik de smaak te pakken. Mijn vingers galopperen over het keyboard. Ik tik woorden als: continuïteit, onmisbaarheid, informatieachterstand, back-up functie.
Het doet me denken aan de periode dat ik meedeed aan iedere slagzinwedstrijd die ik tegenkwam.
‘De koek van Wieger Ketellapper ….wordt met de minuut kleffer en ook slapper.’
Of: ‘Met Conimex kruidenpaste voor Indische nasi……. smaakt alles lekker, zelfs de kont van Lassie.’ En daar kon je dan een rubberboot mee winnen of een jaar gratis kauwgum. Ik won nooit. Tot ik me realiseerde dat men geen slimme vondsten wilde, maar sociaal wenselijke slagzinnen. Prompt won ik wat. Een set ovenwanten met lachende tomaten erop. Yes!!!
Ik tik vlijtig verder, alsof er een kittig keukenschort met zingende paprika’s te winnen valt. Moeiteloos laat ik zien welke processen er allemaal onder gaan lijden, hoe zeer de student de dupe wordt, hoe sterk ons aanbod als diensverlener zal verschralen. Anderhalve pagina tranentrekkend proza verder houd ik het voor gezien, printje in mapje, mapje in bakje en nu maar hopen op genade en wijsheid.
Twee dagen later wenkt de secretaresse me in het voorbijgaan. De vacature is getoetst en toegekend, zegt ze. Je mag voorlopig iemand inhuren.
Yes! Ellen-in-formulieren-land rules! En zachtjes mompel ik: ‘Met het vacaturebeleid van de TU Delft… vraag je dubbel want je krijgt toch de helft.’
