News in brief

Iranians

‘Stop suspecting Iranians! Academic freedom has no nationality!’ This slogan is part of a petition that was recently published on a new website www.iraansestudenten.nl. The site was started by Dutch and foreign researchers and students at Dutch universities, university hospitals and research institutes. Among the groups’ founders are TU Delft PhDers Ali Mesbah and Behnam Taebi, and Delft undergraduate student Sara Emami. The group says that the restrictions that the Dutch government has instructed universities to place on Iranian students are ‘stigmatizing and discriminatory’. The group is especially angry that the University of Twente and University of Eindhoven are excluding Iranian students and PhDs; they have called this action “absurd”. Professors from the three Dutch technological universities, as well as those from other Dutch universities, have signed the petition.
Women

The number of women receiving PhD degrees is steadily increasing. Of all the recent doctoral graduates younger than 35 years old, half were women. Women took on average 5.4 years to complete their doctorial studies, which is nine months less than the average for male PhD students, according to the Central Bureau for Statistics. In 2005, there were 72,000 doctoral graduates in the Netherlands under the age of 70, of which 30 percent were women. Women with PhD degrees were also more likely to have full-time jobs than other women.
