Flat tireSuperbus will not be presented at this summer’s Olympic Games in Peking.

The reason is there is not enough time to get Superbus the proper authorization for the Chinese roadways. TU Delft expressed disappointment that the opportunity was lost, as the Superbus concept suited the sustainability theme of the Olympic village. The first Superbus model however will be unveiled in late June in the Netherlands.

Summer Festival

The Sports and Cultural Centre will host the TU Delft Summer Festival for current and former TU Delft students and staff The festival will feature live music, DJs, theatre, cabaret and dance. The festival’s theme this year is ‘Connecting Colors’. The festival venue is the Sports and Cultural Centre site. The festival is on Friday, June 6. Admission is free from 16:00 to 22:30, after which the admission charges are € 5 in advance and € 7.50 on the door.

New portal

There will be a new one-stop-shop for Zuid-Holland companies with questions about science and technology: the Business to Science Portal Holland. The portal is the brainchild of Medical Delta partners Leiden University, Leiden University Medical Centre, TU Delft and Erasmus MC, together with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research TNO. The Business to Science Portal focuses on small and medium-sized life sciences and medical technology businesses. The knowledge institutes behind the Business to Science Portal will approach companies in the region to assess their specific needs for new knowledge. The results will help ensure that knowledge can be developed that is tailored to innovation. This approach is new in the Netherlands, and follows resounding successes in Edinburgh, Oxford and elsewhere in Great Britain. The Business to Science Portal Holland is to receive 1.5 million euros from the Peaks in the Delta fund. The participating universities will contribute manpower and resources.

Bright idea

Bram de Zwart, a MSc student in Industrial Design Engineering, has designed a laptop accessory that will be put on the market by a Dutch company. The ComputerCouch is ergonomic, aids cooling and offers laptop protection. After his return from Milan, where he first conceived of the idea of the ComputerCouch, Bram contacted the Valorisation Centre. He then spoke with potential partners within the country and abroad together with Han Oey, one of the Centre’s business developers. The contract was won by Dutch company BakkerElkhuizen Ergonomie, which now has the exclusive rights to develop and sell the product. Sorpresa, the company established by Bram with the aid of the Valorisation center, owns the design. The ComputerCouch should be in the shops before the end of the year.


Excellent ethnic

Hanane Ouna has won the ECHO Award for Most Excellent Ethnic Minority University Student. Hanane is a fifth-year Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management student of Moroccan origin who will soon be graduating from the TU Delft. Education Minister Ronald Plasterk presented the 2008 ECHO Award to her on April 3rd at a ceremony held in Amsterdam’s Royal Tropical Institute.

Gone fishing
A unique photo exhibition by Dos Winkel, entitled ‘What’s the catch with fish’ is currently open at the TU Delft Library, from 10 April to 22 May. Admission is free. Dos Winkel has been diligently capturing magnificent underwater life on film for many years. His photo exhibitions of the most spectacular examples of aquatic life have traveled all around the world. His latest book, ‘What’s the catch with fish?’, will be published in September.
