In March 2002, a drunk-driver killed two TU students. The 28-year-old man from Schipluiden has been sentenced to three years in prison (one year probation) by a court in Den Haag.
He has also had his licensed suspended for five years and, upon his release from prison, must follow an alcohol rehabilitation program. The two TU architecture students, Thomas Dubbink (25) and Mareike Peil (26) from Germany, were bicycling on the Zuidwal when the accident occurred. The driver left the scene. Two policemen happened to witness the accident and gave chase. The driver had two prior convictions for drunk driving.
I am the Walrus
The most prestigious student award, Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Lemelson-MIT Award for Inventiveness, has been won by James McLurkin, a 30-year-old PhD student. McLurkin received $30,000 for his ‘swarm of robots’: 125 basic robots (cyberbees) that are able to disperse, gather and follow a leader. The robots on wheels, which are box-shaped and measure 12 sq. centimeters, communicate with each other via infrared television remote controls.
According to the ‘The Boston Globe’, McLurkin grew up in a poor black neighborhood. With a portion of his prize money, McLurkin plans to fund projects that will help get poor children interested in science and technology.
At the award ceremony, McLurkin’s mother said she always thought
she had a very gifted child: As a two-year-old, McLurkin put French fries in his nose and said, “Look Mom, I’m a walrus!”, even though he’d never actually seen a walrus before.
