News in brief

Eleven hot papers for TU DelftEleven TU Delft scientific articles, published in 1997 or later, have been citied so many times that they belong to the top one percent of the best scientific papers in their field.

That conclusion was drawn from the Internet site of CWTS, a bureau which provided information for an article about Dutch universities published last week in the Dutch weekly magazine, Elsevier. And the TU winner is: Professor Cees Dekker and his research group, whose six hot papers on nanotechnology research were cited 1,086 times in other articles in scientific journals. Chemical engineers Professor Jacob Moulijn and Professor Roger Sheldon, and mathematician Professor Carsten Scherer, each produced a hot paper. These articles were cited some forty times.

Delft roof at Floriade

It comes into being with an explosion. Dr. Karel Voller, of the faculty of Architecture, has developed a new, cheaper method of constructing an aluminium roof, using plates that are double-bent (see photo page 3). His roof will be displayed on a stand at the Floriade, the world horticulture exposition, which will be held in Haarlemmermeer, near Schiphol airport. The Floriade opens its doors on April 6th. Voller expects that in future his double-bent aluminium plates will also be used for building luxurious sailing yachts.
