Housing ContainersStichting Duwo, the housing company, will build new student housing in Amsterdam this summer. If all goes according to plan, prior to the start of the new academic year Duwo will have built 330 new student housing units on the IJ-oevers.
These new housing units are not traditional student rooms, but rather steel containers, measuring 3 X 9 meters. These steel boxes do offer independent living though, each unit having its own kitchen and bathroom. For TU students who have always dreamed of paying for the privilege of living in a steel box, be patient: A number of these units will also be built on Delft’s De Leeghwaterstraat
Crisis in Berlin
Hard times at Berlin’s Humboldt University. The university, once the pride of Communist East Germany’s educational system, is going bankrupt. The university is in such a dire financial position that it is no longer accepting new students, because, the university says, it cannot guarantee that it will be around in four years time when first-year students enrolling this year come to graduate. Humboldt University is not alone, however. Higher education in Germany has been in crisis for years and many universities are struggling financially, especially in bankrupt Berlin. The 120,000 students studying at the various Berlin universities and colleges pay just 150 euros in tuition fees per semester, free public transport within the city included. Berlin’s financial alderman for finance, Thilo Sarrazin, has a solution for university financial problems: He says foreign Erasmus students should be expelled from Berlin’s universities and that in future only economics, law, and a few other subjects he deems to be socially relevant should be offered at German universities. Two weeks ago German university students and staff took to the streets to protest
College arsonists
Two students at Seton University in New Jersey, USA, have been accused of arson and murder. In 2000, Joseph L. and Sean R. allegedly lit a piece of paper on fire, the paper subsequently falling on and igniting a highly flammable foam-rubber couch, causing a blaze that soon engulfed the entire 600-student dormitory building, killing three students and injuring 50. The two students have pleaded innocent, and their supporters say the university is really to blame because the student dormitory building was 50 years-old and did not have a sprinkler system. Seton Hall University is the largest Catholic university in the United States.
