News in Brief

Mobile headachesDutch Institute for Applied Research in Delft, TNO, has discovered that the communications antennas for UMTS connections, which provide fast links between Internet servers and mobile phones, could be harmful to your health.

People near the antennas can develop dizziness, head-aches and reduced concentration. The findings come just as the Netherlands was preparing to install hundreds of UMTS antennas on the roofs of office buildings. TNO research into this phenomenon is the first of its kind in the world.

Slow Promo

TU Delft has a slow and expensive PhD. promotion process, according to a report by Promood, which studied promotion processes at ten European universities. The main cause of delay for TU promotions is the waiting time between submitting the draft thesis and defending the thesis. At TU Delft, this process takes 16 weeks, while at ETH Zurich and Oxford the processing time is less than a month. To speed up the process here, TU PhDs recommend scraping the requirement of delivering theses in book form and allowing promotions to occur in the summer months.
