US downA new study found the number of foreign students enrolling in US colleges increased by only 0.6 percent in 2002-03 % the lowest growth rate in seven years.

The Institute of International Education (IIE) said tight visa procedures enacted after 2001%s terrorist attacks delayed the entry of many foreigners, contributing to the low growth rate. In 2000-01, foreign enrollment had increased by 6.4 percent. US schools need foreign students for revenue. The IIE said international students spend up to $12 billion annually on tuition and other expenses. A long-term decline in foreign student enrollment %%may damage our ability to attract the best and the brightest,%% said Alice Gast, associate provost at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Meanwhile, non-US institutions are benefiting. The number of Chinese students enrolling in British institutions rose by more than 36 percent this year, according to the Britain%s Universities Admissions Service, while Indian student enrollments were up 16 percent. Students from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa experienced the greatest delays obtaining US visas in 2002-03.

From November 5-28th, the Faculty of Architecture is hosting the exhibition, Vision of the Future – Innovation in Architecture. The exhibition features new, exciting and innovative materials that can be used in architecture. The organizers hope to highlight the importance of building technology and demonstrate how it influences architecture. The exhibition is centered around the work of a large group of students, as well as the work of architect Richard Horden and sculptor Marijke de Goey.
