News in Brief

Fire safety Architecture increasedThe faculty of Architecture will use two lecture halls only partly. %The number of students in the faculty building has increased so much, that the capacity of escape routes isn’t sufficient anymore,” explains Cor Kooij, head facility management at Architecture.

No more than 65 people may be present in lecture halls on the second and fourth floor. If the studios on the same floors are used, no one is allowed. At night the lecture halls may be used to full extent. Lectures have been relocated to halls in the buildings of civil engineering and technical mathmatics.

Searching for cracks

Earth scientists of Delft, Amsterdam and Utrecht universities and the seismologic department of the Royal Dutch Meteorological Institute will join forces to map the Dutch soil up (or down?) to thirty kilometres deep, by using sonic waves. At such depth earth quakes are originated, for instance 1992’s earthquake in Roermond was caused at a depth of 15 kilometres. Several dozens metres deep, the soil will be blown to pieces with dynamite, thus creating sound waves which disappear in the depth of the earth. Cracks and breaks will reveal themselves because they’ll reflect the sound waves differently.

Appointment rector too late

According to TU rules rector Karel Wakker can’t resign in January, as currently is planned. The name of his successor must be known six months in advance, so the university can get used to it’s new figurehead and the future rector has time to settle into his new job. Current TU executive board president De Voogd regrets that the rule hasn’t been met. However, Wakker will be replaced, and thereby the rule will be neglected. Probably in two weeks the new rector’s name will be announced.
