DUT invests in chemical companyAll three Dutch technical universities are investing 3.3 million guilders each in stocks of Avantium, a newly founded company that will develop new technologies for fast screening of catalysts and chemical processes using robots.
Avantium’s dynamic, innovative laboratory will be in the DelftChemTech building, of the Delft University of Technology (DUT). The company’s commercial lab is in Amsterdam. In return for the 3 million-guilder investment, Avantium guarantees that Delft researchers will receive two million guilders for specific company research projects. The new company will allow DUT chemists to work with expensive equipment. (See page 15)
Greener route for alcohol oxidation
DUT chemists discovered a new route for alcohol oxidation, which does not require environmentally unfriendly heavy metals and organic solvents containing chlorine. Alcohol oxidation is an important step in making aromas. The Delft chemists were able to carry out this step using oxygen, palladium and water as a solvent. An article about their discovery was published in last week’s issue of the prestigious scientific magazine, Science. (See page 8)
New member of the management board
Dr. Jan Oele (60), former director of the Dutch oil and gas producer NAM, has been appointed as a fourth member of the DUT managing board. Oele will co-ordinate the implementation of policies relating to finance, employees, real estate and information technology. It is the first time the management board consists of four members. By extending the board, DUT hopes to implement new policies faster. (See page 1)
Delft gets an American Football team
A new American Football club was founded this year in Delft. The team, named the Delft Dragons, has about 25 players and trains once a week at the DUT sporting centre. Next week, training will be expanded to twice a week. Because most players are inexperienced and uniforms expensive (approx. 700 guilders each), the team is not currently competing in an official league. For the time being, they are playing flag football, a non-contact version of football that involves ‘tackling’ your opponents by pulling a flag attached to their hips. (See page 5)
