Fast internet connection for student apartment buildingsThe 2,600 students living in the large apartment buildings on Oudraadtweg, Korvezeestraat, Baltahasar van der Polweg, Krakeelhof (Jacoba van Beierenlaan) and Buitenhof (Van Hasseltlaan) will get their own fiberglass-wire internet connection.

This will occur within two years, thanks to a government subsidy of one million guilders. Two megabits per second will be available simultaneously for twenty percent of the students.

Architecture reassures government inspection

The faculty of Architecture has reassured the government%s education inspection team that intervention isn’t necessary. Rumours circulated in Delft%s local newspaper that the inspectors had threatened to intervene because of severe shortcomings in the architecture course. In the worst case scenario, the architecture course would have been cancelled.

It’s true that the examination committee, which monitors the quality of education at Dutch universities, had published a report criticising some aspects of the TU’s architecture course. For instance, the Faculty of Architecture was accused of inadequate scientific training, low examination standards and placing insufficient attention on information and communication technology during the course. The faculty reassured the government inspection team that the problems are being dealt with. In two years time, the inspection team will check to see if the problems have been solved.

TU coordinates EU project on wind energy

The Wind Energy section of Civil Engineering has been appointed to coordinate an EU project that will investigate the possibilities of offshore wind farms. Seventeen partners, from thirteen European countries, have joined forces in the project, called ‘Concerted Action on Offshore Wind Energy in Europe.’ Experts expect wind energy to become a major energy source, capable of providing millions of people with electricity. 472,500 Euros have been reserved for the project.
