News in Brief

TU’s Masterplan handles ego’sThe core of the new TU campus’ masterplan is three glass buildings on the Mekelweg, revealed Francine Houben, the project’s main architect.

Her scale-model showed roofs fanning out graciously towards the faculty buildings, connecting them to each other. The glass constructions will contain lecture halls, offices, restaurants, exhibition halls and a supermarket. Houben’s research revealed that the TU has a relatively low ‘population density’ of 143 people per hectare. To ensure the three buildings attract sufficient crowds, they’ll be located on the Mekelweg, between the Aula and Architecture building. New student housing facilities and a sport hall will be built near the sports center. Regarding the rough exteriors and ‘ego’s’ of existing buildings, Houben has plans varying from glass facades for Civil Engineering and Applied Physics, to applying ‘cosy’ paving, art and artistic landmarks that provide ’emotion.’ Houben was reluctant to talk about the costs involved but did briefly mention that project will cost about one billion guilders. Technopolis

Delft and the TU are investigating the feasibility of a high-tech industrial park, called Technopolis. R&D companies, offering high-quality employment, could set up their businesses at the southern end of the TU campus, south of the Kruithuisweg. If Technopolis is considered feasible, the city will change the zoning scheme. The TU hopes that Technopolis will help finance part of the new campus redevelopment plan.
