Knowledge workersThe Christian Democrat (CDA) party isn’t satisfied with the special entry visa procedure for foreign knowledge workers.

This special procedure was established to speed-up visa procedures for university-educated foreigners who want to work in the Netherlands. A CDA party member said the procedure was still ‘bumpy. We shouldn’t be so satisfied so quickly’. About a thousand foreigners have used this special visa procedure. They can live and work in the Netherlands for five years. The Immigration & Naturalization Department recently registered 400 new foreign knowledge workers.

Sport & technology

The theme of the opening of the new TU Delft academic year on Monday 5 September is ‘Sport: a question of technique’. Top Dutch ice-skater Bart Veldkamp, who will participate in this year’s Winter Olympics, will talk about how new materials, new skates and strips on skating suits have helped him in his career. He’ll also talk about the importance of nutrition, the balance between work and relaxation, and perseverance. The opening presentation starts at 15:30 in the aula auditorium.

TU Delft Professor Wubbo Ockels lectured to around one thousand young people about the importance of sustainable energy at the recent Lowlands pop-music festival. Ockels, who achieved national fame in 1986 as the first Dutch astronaut said: “The Netherlands has fallen behind in innovation.” He said today’s youth had to use “the possibilities of technology to make the future possible.” Ockels’ lecture was part of the ‘Lowlands University’, which also featured talks by Ruud Lubbers, the former Dutch Prime Minister, and Ronald Plasterk, a molecular biologist and director of Hubrecht Laboratory, Utrecht.
