The field is estimated to contain 4 billion cubic metres of natural gas – enough to power 2.5 million Dutch homes for one year. Elsewhere up north, some 800 people in northeastern Groningen were allowed to their homes, after having been evacuated when high water levels from heavy rainfall threatened to breach local dikes.



Over the last three years, 51 people have drowned in Amsterdam canals. The majority of these canal deaths were men who fell in while trying to urinate in the water. Portuguese multinational corporations are under fire for transferring their assets to bank accounts in the Netherlands in order to avoid paying taxes in Portugal, profiting from low Dutch tax rates and bilateral tax treaties.



Klaas Knot, the Dutch central bank (DNB) president, revealed that the Netherlands keeps 90 percent of its gold reserves in New York City vaults. Knot said the “the gold is fine where it is”, but a US economist warned the US government could confiscate foreign gold reserves if the dollar falters. The total amount of the Netherlands’ gold reserves is a state secret; however, when pressed, Knot said gold reserves with “a weight of 67 tons and value of about 3 billion euros” are currently held in DNB vaults in Amsterdam. Queen Beatrix, in Abu Dhabi on a state visit, wore a headscarf when touring the Sheikh Zayed Mosque, prompting the Freedom Party (PVV) to charge that Queen Beatrix was thereby legitimising oppression of women living under Islam. After an Ajax fan stormed the pitch at Amsterdam Arena and attacked the goalkeeper of AZ during a match on 21 December, the Dutch Football Association ruled that only women and children can attend the next match between Ajax and AZ on 19 January. Gay activist groups however also want gay people to be allowed to attend the match, as homosexuals face hostility at Dutch football matches. Two national unions for Dutch high school teachers called a three-day strike to protest government plans to increase the annual teaching hours from 1,000 to 1,040. FNV Bondgenoten, the union for cleaning workers, also called a strike, leaving many of the country’s trains and train stations filthy. Amsterdam’s chief of police warned that deeper cuts to health services will result in more crime, as 30 percent of policing is related to mental health problems and further cuts will force more mentally ill people to live on the streets. Utrecht police officers reacted angrily to a light sentence given to an 18-year-old male who punched a police officer in the face yet only received a sentence of 20 hours community service. Elsewhere, Apeldoorn police discovered 160 kilos of cocaine, with a street-value of 7 million euros, hidden in a shipment of pineapples traveling from Antwerp to Apeldoorn. A football player, angered that he’d been shown a red card, kicked a 77-year-old man in the stomach while leaving the field during an amateur match in Amsterdam. The old man, who had cheered the red card, later died in hospital after having his spleen removed. Two Dutch nationals of Moroccan origin were deported back to the Netherlands: Pakistani secret service accuse the two of attempting to join al-Qaeda. And finally, in a case of ‘too positive’ discrimination, the Equal Opportunities Board reprimanded the University of Groningen for hiring 12 female professors without interviewing male candidates for the positions. 

Studenten die meer dan 13.215 euro bijverdienen, kunnen maar beter hun beurs stopzetten en hun ov-kaart inleveren. Wie dat vergeet, moet later een deel van zijn studiefinanciering terugbetalen. Ieder jaar overkomt dat zo’n dertienduizend studenten.

Staatssecretaris Halbe Zijlstra heeft gezegd dat hij de studiefinanciering wil ‘vereenvoudigen’. Er zouden minder uitzonderingen moeten gelden, vindt hij. Daarbij denkt hij allereerst aan bepaalde groepen studenten die langer mogen studeren of een aanvullende beurs krijgen. Maar overweegt hij misschien ook de bijverdiengrens af te schaffen?

“Wij pleiten daar al jaren voor”, zegt kamerlid Boris van der Ham van D66. “En nu met nog meer inzet dan voorheen. Als wij studenten vragen om meer te betalen voor hun studie, dan moeten we ook die bijverdiengrens opheffen. Als studentondernemers succesvol worden, mag dat niet ten koste van hun studiefinanciering gaan.”

Maar de VVD-fractie ziet niets in het afschaffen van de bijverdiengrens. “Ondernemerschap na je studie is goed”, zegt het liberale kamerlid Anne-Wil Lucas, “maar tijdens je studie moet je vooral met studeren en tijdig afstuderen bezig zijn.” Ze denkt niet dat masterstudenten meer tijd zullen gaan besteden aan bijbaantjes, als ze geen basisbeurs meer krijgen: “Eerder andersom. Hoe langer je er over doet, hoe meer je moet lenen.”

Het CDA was niet bereikbaar. Van partijleider Maxime Verhagen, minister van Economische Zaken, Landbouw & Innovatie, is bekend dat hij ondernemerschap graag wil aanjagen, ook onder studenten. Die zouden bijvoorbeeld op basis van no cure, no pay toegang moeten krijgen tot patenten van hun hogeschool of universiteit.

Studentenbonden ISO en LSVb vinden dat de bijverdiengrens geschrapt of verruimd mag worden. “Er worden miljoenen uitgetrokken om ondernemerschap onder studenten te stimuleren”, zegt voorzitter Guy Hendricks van het ISO. “De grens ligt vrij laag, zeker voor beginnende ondernemers.”

De LSVb vindt dat je best iets mag terugbetalen als je het overheidsgeld niet nodig hebt, maar heeft wel problemen met de huidige regeling. Voorzitter Sander Breur: “Eigenlijk zou je moeten kunnen sparen voor magere jaren waarin je geen basisbeurs meer krijgt of verhoogd collegegeld moet betalen.”

Ook de PvdA vond in het verleden dat de bijverdiengrens moest worden geschrapt, hoewel voormalig PvdA-minister Ronald Plasterk dat uiteindelijk te duur vond. Kamerlid Tanja Jadnanansing, tegenwoordig woordvoerder hoger onderwijs, denkt dat het nog steeds te duur zou zijn de grens af te schaffen, maar wil de positie van studentondernemers graag nader bekijken.

De Socialistische Partij niet. “Het lijkt wel alsof we vergeten dat studenten gewoon moeten studeren”, verzucht kamerlid Jasper van Dijk. “Het is niet vreemd dat de overheid geen beurs geeft aan studenten die veel geld verdienen. En je moet ook niet het signaal afgeven dat het prima is om veel te werken naast je opleiding.”
