A non-smoking policy is difficult to enforceA month ago the executive board sent a letter to superintendents of university buildings, asking them to more strictly enforce the university’s non-smoking policy.

The board stresses that smoking is not allowed in public areas, and that it is forbidden to create small smoking areas in canteens. People can only smoke in their private offices. However, according to a Delta reporter, many students ignore the new rules and smoke in study areas, continuing to smoke even when asked to stop by caretakers, who have no power to sanction or expel the offending students.

Top group in electronics goes to Eindhoven

A research group in photonic integrated circuits, led by Dr. M.K. Smit, will be transferred to Eindhoven Technical University within one year. Smit’s group, comprised of twelve people, is well known and respected, having received maximum scores for quality, productivity and relevance during a recent visit by an examination committee. The transfer is in keeping with a former agreement, which stated that silicon electronics research would be exclusively for Delft, and optical chips and III-V semiconductor research for Eindhoven.

Whole year of campaigning for new students

Competition between Dutch universities is getting tougher. “Campaigning for new students goes on all year,” says Cor Jansen of Utrecht University, signalling a change from past policy, when universities recruited new students only during springtime. “Pupils and their parents have become critical consumers, taking their time to make well-considered decisions.” Leiden University not only offers flyers, glossy brochures, thematic days, and help with exams, but even hired a TV-celebrity, Peter R. de Vries, and popular Dutch fiction writer Roland Giphart, to help their recruiting drive.
