New institute for cyber security

TU Delft has teamed up with Leiden University and The Hague University of Applied Sciences to create a new institute aimed at giving working professionals an academic credential in cyber security.

Called the Cyber Security Academy, the institute hopes to attract highly educated technical professionals, lawyers and policy makers to its interdisciplinary courses in The Hague, leading to either a Master of Science in Cyber Security or a short-track master class.

The full master’s program is designed to be completed part-time within one-and-a-half to two years, excluding the thesis period. The CSA opens this year and begins its pilot class this month, with courses entirely in both Dutch and English. The master’s program begins in September.

The CSA was created in response to the interests of several public and private organisations around The Hague. Using the CSA as a strategic tool, these experts hope to create a security cluster in the area, The Hague Security Delta. This concentration of knowledge is thought to serve the needs of a dynamic society that technology is constantly transforming.

The research director of the CSA is TU Delft professor of cyber security Professor Jan van den Berg. Of the interdisciplinary nature of the curriculum, Van den Berg said in a statement, “In time, only a more integrated approach to cyber security can contribute to finding a balance between the unprecedented opportunities and the related risks of our rapidly digitising society.”

Along with Van den Berg, one other core faculty member comes from TU Delft, Professor Jan van der Lubbe, professor of intelligent systems.
