Gouke Moes (33) will be the new Minister of Education. This was announced by BBB on Monday evening. After the departure of Eppo Bruins and other NSC ministers, the two remaining governing parties, VVD and BBB, had to look for successors.
Moes became in 2021 politically active for BBB. In 2023 he joined the Provincial Council of Groningen, where he became group chair. In March he became a deputy of the province. He previously worked as a blacksmith and machine operator. He switched to education and taught English, technology, physics and chemistry. He was also a PIE (production, installation and energy) teacher.
Rainbow crossing
A year ago, Moes tweeted about a rainbow crossing that had been defaced with swastikas: “That’s how polarisation works. It’s a shame, a shame on both sides.”
When someone on X asked which two sides he meant, he replied: “The side that decided that such a rainbow path should be built there, thereby completely ignoring the perceptions of many young people there (perhaps even provoking), and the side that then opposes it with swastikas.”
Moes himself denied that he equated the rainbow and the swastika. “What I am saying is that if you want to move beyond polarisation, you have to try to understand the other side. I was just wondering whether this is the best way to combat polarisation, or the best way to further the LGBTIAQ+ movement. And I think it’s a shame that people stand so far apart that this is happening.”
GroenLinks-PvdA MP Lisa Westerveld has announced that she will submit parliamentary questions following Moes’s nomination as minister.
