Leiden opens research on anti-Semitism at the Faculty of Law
Leiden University opens an investigation into Professor Paul Cliteur. He is said to distance himself too little from alleged anti-Semitic statements by his political friend Thierry Baudet.
Until recently, Cliteur was senator of Forum voor Democratie (FvD) in the first chamber of the Dutch parliament. Party leader Baudet was given a PhD with Cliteur in 2012. The party has since been torn apart after internal clashes over malicious Whatsapp messages from the youth movement and anti-Semitic statements by Baudet himself. Cliteur quit as a senator last week, but does not distance himself from Baudet in an interview with university newspaper Mare.
Pattern
For Rector Magnificus Carel Stolker this all seems to have reached a limit. “The accusation of a pattern of anti-Semitism around FvD is extremely worrying and touches Paul Cliteur”, he twittered. “Anti-Semitism and racism, as well as the failure to distance oneself from them, are totally unacceptable. To be continued soon”. (HOP, Bas Belleman)
